Planning Your First Scuba Diving Experience in the UAE
Learn what to expect before your first dive, how introductory experiences work and how to choose the right location, equipment and training option.

Scuba diving opens up a whole new world of adventure, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of the most exciting places to begin your underwater journey. From the vibrant coral reefs of Fujairah to the unique training environments in Dubai, there is an experience tailored for every aspiring diver.
Why Dive in the UAE?
The UAE offers diverse diving environments that cater to all skill levels. The East Coast (Fujairah) is famous for its natural coral reefs, rocky passages, and marine life like green turtles, blacktip reef sharks, and colorful reef fish. Dubai, on the other hand, provides world-class training facilities, pool environments, and the famous Dubai Aquarium dive experience, where you can dive alongside sand tiger sharks and rays in a controlled setting.
What to Expect on Your First Dive
If you have never breathed underwater before, your journey will likely begin with a program like PADI Discover Scuba Diving. Here is what to expect:
- Briefing: Your instructor will explain the basic safety guidelines, how the equipment works, and the hand signals used to communicate underwater.
- Shallow Water Practice: You will start in a swimming pool or a shallow, calm beach to get comfortable breathing through your regulator and practicing key safety skills like clearing your mask.
- The Open Water Dive: Once comfortable, you will head out for a guided dive (usually up to 12 meters deep) to explore the reef under the close supervision of your instructor.
Choosing the Right Option: Discover Scuba vs. Open Water Certification
If you want a one-off experience to see if you like diving, the Discover Scuba Diving program is perfect. However, if you are ready to become a certified diver, you should enroll in the PADI Open Water Diver Course. The Open Water certification requires 3-4 days of training, including theory, pool sessions, and 4 open water dives. Once certified, you can dive anywhere in the world down to 18 meters without an instructor.
Essential Tips for Beginners
To make the most of your first dive, keep these tips in mind:
- Listen to your instructor: Pay close attention to the briefing and follow all safety instructions.
- Equalize early and often: Equalizing your ears as you descend prevents discomfort. Never wait until you feel pain.
- Relax and breathe: Breathe slowly and deeply. It is natural to feel excited, but steady breathing keeps you calm and helps conserve your air.
- Do not touch the marine life: Respect the underwater environment. Keep your hands to yourself to protect both yourself and the delicate corals.
